Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Waterworks Museum! Within our landmark historic building in Boston, we are stewards of the monumental steam engines and historic artifacts that tell the story of how safe drinking water was supplied to Boston and surrounding towns beginning in the 19th century.

We are a dynamic organization that can offer our volunteers unique experiences, fun opportunities, and the excitement of engaging with visitors from all over the world!

All volunteers must be at least 15 years of age or older (those under 18 must have parental permission to volunteer with us). We have three main volunteer roles:

  • Museum Ambassador: Ambassadors are stationed in the Great Engines Hall to assist and answer questions for visitors exploring on their own. We welcome Museum Ambassadors to volunteer for any length of time during our open hours.
  • Public Tour Guide: Guides lead groups of visitors on a general tour around the museum (20-40 min) during one of our scheduled tour times each day.
  • Community Event Volunteer: Event volunteers assist with large-scale community events that are open to the public. Roles could include staffing an activity, craft, or demo station, providing directions and information to visitors, assisting community partner organizations, and more. These volunteers will typically be called upon 1-4 times per year.

Please fill out the requested information below to apply for a volunteer position within the museum. Once received, a staff member will contact you shortly.
