Simple Machines and the Waterworks Museum (ages 7–12)

July 28, 2020

Join the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum’s education staff for a virtual tour of the Great Engines Hall, where you will learn about the history of their steam powered water pumps and the important role they played in the local water system. Then, to better understand these complex machines, learn about the six Simple Machines and how they can work together to make our lives easier. Finally, using common household materials, build a Simple Machine of your own to complete a design challenge. Recommended for ages 7–12.

This is an ONLINE class that is hosted on the Zoom Platform. Upon booking, you will receive a link to access the class via email. Simply click on the link when it’s time for your class. Please download Zoom prior to the start of the class.

For the Simple Machine Design Challenge, in addition to a small ball (ping pong ball, rubber ball, marble, etc.), students will need a variety of craft materials to choose from. The following materials would work well: Popsicle sticks, Rubber Bands, Cardboard, String, bottle caps, twist ties, tape, duct tape, Scissors, pipe cleaners, paper, toilet paper or paper towel rolls.
