Second Saturday Speaker Series

Sex, Crime & Trophy Taking at the Gilded Age Waterworks

July 12, 2025

1pm–2pm

Join us every second Saturday of the month at 1pm to learn more about area and industrial history, engineering, archeology, water access and more from experts in a variety of fields. On July 12th, Museum Executive Director Peterson will be presenting Sex, Crime, & Trophy Taking at the Gilded Age Metropolitan Waterworks.

One way to understand the historical context of the Chestnut Hill High Service Pumping Station is to examine it as a point of intersection between many of the Gilded Age’s most colorful and prosperous businessmen. Whether it was through their ownership of essential materials or their control of the means of production of certain components, this site is unusual in that it can connect to many of this period’s industrialists in ways that they certainly were never aware of. This presentation is both an exploration of these points of contact and a brief sketch of the lives of some of the most famous moguls of the late 19th and early 20th century, including the prizes or infamy they acquired.

All events are upstairs in the Overlook Gallery. The presentations are free and open to everyone, including walk-in visitors, space permitting. Please help us monitor capacity by reserving your FREE tickets in advance.
