VIRTUAL Summer Science Series: Simple Machines (ages 7-12)
July 27, 2021
10:00 am–10:45 am
Learn about the massive machines at the Waterworks Museum and the simple machines that make them work. Then build your own simple machine.
First, we will take a virtual look around the museum’s “Great Engines Hall” and learn about how these complex machines played an important role in the local water system. Then, to better understand these complex machines, we’ll learn about the six Simple Machines and how they can work together to make our lives easier. Finally, using common household materials, we will build a Simple Machine of our own to complete a design challenge. Recommended for ages 7-12.
This is an ONLINE class that is hosted on the Zoom Platform. Upon booking, you will receive a link to access the class.
For the Simple Machine Design Challenge, in addition to a small ball (ping pong ball, rubber ball, marble, etc.), participants will need a variety of craft materials to choose from. The following materials would work well: Popsicle sticks, Rubber Bands, Cardboard, String, bottle caps, twist ties, tape, duct tape, Scissors, pipe cleaners, paper, toilet paper or paper towel rolls, tin foil, etc.
To see more virtual sessions in this series, check Tuesdays at 10 am in July on our events calendar.

Moving Water: From Ancient Innovations to Modern Challenges
Ancient civilizations engineered water systems that sustained communities for thousands of years. This exhibition spotlights six places that innovated ways to deliver, and control water for human use. It also looks at how climate change is impacting all of those places, forcing public officials to consider new ways to keep the water flowing.
