Waterworks Wednesday with Architect Umberto Guarracino

On Strength by Repetition in Industrial Design

March 29, 2017

7pm

Umberto GuarracinoThe Metropolitan Waterworks Museum welcomes architect Umberto Guarracino, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, of GDA design & architecture, inc. in West Hanover, MA, for a very special illustrated lecture entitled “Strength by Repetition in Industrial and Utilitarian Architecture.”

Working with the design concept of “parti,” the talk will examine the architect’s organization of forms, spaces and volumes into orderly groups – a process that can become highly recognizable and memorable, if strengthened by the presence of a fundamental or repetitive element. Industrial and utilitarian facilities, like the historic Waterworks building, gain an aesthetic intensity through the use of such design elements.

Mr. Guarracino, formerly a lead architect at CDM Smith, will take a look at the concept of “parti” in design. Drawing from a wealth of experience in applied and private practice, he will describe both ancient and modern works of architecture, including his own designs at locations across the globe.
