AgX Film Collective @ The Waterworks

7:30pm (doors)–10:00pm

Non-Event, Balagan, and the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum present
experimental sound and film works by

VICTORIA SHEN
ASHA TAMIRISA
AgX FILM COLLECTIVE

Conceived as a sort of “live installation,” this second collaborative event between Non-Event and Balagan in the Waterworks Museum seeks once again to exploit the acoustic and architectural peculiarities of the massive 19th-century pumping station as a non-traditional cinema space and concert venue. Multiple 16mm and video projections, in combination with live multichannel performances by local experimental musicians, Victoria Shen and Asha Tamirisa, will breathe new life into the giant pumping engines of the museum’s Great Engines Hall.

Roughly a dozen members of the AgX Film Collective will present new works specially created for the space, informed by its history and architecture, and in dialogue with its intended function and design. Projectors will be placed throughout the facilities, shining abstracted and figurative imagery onto its many curved and textured surfaces, obstructed and shaped by the geometry of its numerous valves, pistons, and gears.

Presented as part of Non-Event’s ongoing series of experimental sound performances in the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum in which musicians and composers make use of the Great Engine Hall’s extraordinary acoustics.

About the artists

VICTORIA SHEN is a Somerville-based multimedia artist and musician. Shen’s music heavily features analog modular synthesizers, contact microphones, and other handbuilt electronics. Her approach to music is sculptural in both the shaping/texturing of audio waveforms and the design of the sound objects themselves. In addition to her solo work, she is also a member of the NY/Boston noise duo Trim.

ASHA TAMIRISA works with sound, video, and film. Her work has been presented at venues such as the ICA Boston, UnionDocs, The Tank, Spectrum, I-Park Foundation, WomanMade Gallery, and on film festivals such as Punto Y Raya,The New Zealand International Film Festival, The Melbourne International Animation Festival, OFFoff, Magic Lantern Cinema, and the Drone Cinema Film Fest. She has released music on Private Chronology and on Pan Y Rosas. She is a founding member of OPENSIGNAL, a group of artists concerned with the state of gender and race within electronic / computer based art practices. She currently lives in Somerville.

AgX is a Boston-based collective of moving-image artists from a wide variety of cinematic disciplines who possess a mutual appreciation for the medium of photochemical film. AgX is part of a growing movement of artist-run film labs and collectives around the world that have united to share resources, equipment, knowledge, and camaraderie. Through regular work-in-progress screenings, public and member-specific workshops, and a variety of other activities, AgX seeks to facilitate and nurture the local film community that has often felt too fragmentary.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Boston Foundation, as well as grants from the Boston Cultural Council, the Brookline Commission for the Arts, and the Newton Cultural Council, local agencies which are funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. It is also presented with the generous support of WZBC 90.3 FM.
